24th - Yan Lo vs Leveticus

This time I faced Dominik, a very good friend and Malifaux player. Readers of his blog already know he is building a DC-Villain Leveticus Crew and we play very regularly against each other.

First of all, this battle report will be short and it will feature probably the worst game I have played for … I don’t even remember a game like this. “Bad things happen in Malifaux” describes this game very well. It was not because I played worse than my normal games, it was simply by flipping really, really, really bad and not having relevant cards in my Hand. But enough of my whining and enjoy reading the downfall of the Dark Side caused by Joker and his fellows.

Deployment:

Dominik won the Deployment flip and let me deploy first, maybe because of my sniper. :P

Turn 1:

I won the Initiative and let Dominik go first. Rusty Alice used the Walk Action of Scout the Field.

  • 1st Activation (OC): Hodgepodge Effigy gave his condition to Leveticus and walked to the position where Rusty Alice was.
  • 1st Activation (TT): The Soul Porter pushed Yin and Yan Lo.
  • 2nd Activation (OC): Waif walked a bit.
  • 2nd Activation (TT): Tengu double walked in cover.
  • 3rd Activation (OC): Ashes and Dust walked two times and dropped a Scheme Marker.
  • 3rd Activation (TT): Goryo summoned a Seishin and walked once.
  • 4th Activation (OC): Leveticus walked, placed a Scheme Marker and sacrificed Ashes and Dust to draw two cards.
  • 4th Activation (TT): Seishin walked once.
  • 5th Activation (OC): Waif walked up to the Ashen Core.
  • 5th Activation (TT): The Wandering River Monk walked, leaped and walked again.
  • 6th Activation (OC): The Ashen Core let the Monk make two Df-Duels which he passed and I placed a Scheme Marker because of the Df-Trigger.
  • 6th Activation (TT): Yan Lo discarded a card, killed the Seishin, ascended the Spirit Ascendant and walked twice.
  • 7th Activation (OC): The Dust Storm walked and combined himself with the Ashen Core again.
  • 7th Activation (TT): My Katanaka Sniper took a Focus-Action and shot Rusty Alice for 2 damage.
  • 8th Activation (OC): The Desolation Engine walked up the board.
  • 8th Activation (TT): Yin walked twice.
  • 9th Activation (OC): Rusty Alice focused and reactivated the Desolation Engine.
  • 9th Activation (TT): The Lone Swordsman pushed and walked two times.
  • 10th Activation (OC): Desolation Engine dropped his Oathkeeper and charged Yan Lo, dealing 4 damage. After that he took his (0)-Action which dealt 2 damage to the Tengu and the Lone Swordsman. Killed the Tengu with one attack, summoned an Abomination and I scored 2 VP and with his last AP he damaged Yan Lo again for 1 damage after Soulstone use. His Pulse also damaged Yan Lo for another 2 damage.
  • 11th Activation (OC): Abomination walked up to the Lone Swordsman who failed the Df-Duel and suffered 2 damage.

Victory Points after this round were 2-0.

Turn 2:

Dominik won the Initiative and decided to activate first.
  • 1st Activation (OC): The Desolation Engine walked once, used his (0)-Action which damaged Yan Lo, the Goryo and Yin and attacked the Lone Swordsman and reduced him to Hard to kill. The Df-Duel didn’t do any damage, because I cheated my only cards which get me to the TN.
  • 1st Activation (TT): Yan Lo walked once, tried to heal the Swordsman but failed and attacked the Desolation Engine for 0 damage.
  • 2nd Activation (OC): Ashes and Dust walked one time and charged the Monk for 3 damage due to the Black Joker on the second damage flip.
  • 2nd Activation (TT): The Lone Swordsman dropped Recalled Training, attacked the Abomination and killed her with his first attack using the placement-trigger. Now he called the Desolation Engine his target and attacked her for 2 damage.
  • 3rd Activation (OC): The Effigy gave his (0) to Leveticus and walked into the centre of the table.
  • 3rd Activation (TT): The Lone Swordsman attacked the Desolation Engine and killed her with his first attack, Dominik summoned his two Abominations and scored 2 VP for his sucker. The Swordsman killed one Abomination and pushed himself.
  • 4th Activation (OC): Leveticus dropped the Oathkeeper, focused with his ability, sacrificed Ashes and Dust again and placed himself, he focused again and charged Yin and killed her for an Abomination and killed the Lone Swordsman for another Abomination.
  • 4th Activation (TT): My Sniper shot Rusty Alice for another 2 damage.
  • 5th Activation (OC): The Dust Storm charged my Monk and killed it.
  • 5th Activation (TT): My Goryo charged Leveticus and reduced him to 0 Wounds.

From now on I can sum it up, Dominik moved up his Abominations and I simply lost any Df-Duel. Yan Lo survived because of 2 Soulstones, the Soul Porter remained with 1 wound left.

Dominik scored for the Strategy. The Score after Turn 2 was 2-3

Turn 3:

The last Turn of the game started, I had the Initiative and tried to kill the Ashen Core but it survived with 1 wound left. Yan Lo was killed for another Abomination, the Soul Porter died to his attack against an Abomination, Dominik cheated for the trigger for 1 damage. Dominik drew cards with his Abominations and formed a new Desolation Engine and walked with it in the direction of the Sniper. Reactivated her with Rusty Alice and it killed the Sniper for a new Abomination. My Goryo was killed by Leveticus, who sacrificed the Ashen Core.

And so the game was over in Turn 3. Dominik scored for Search the Ruins and the Strategy. The game ended 9-2.

To sum the game up, it’s very hard to do anything if you simply fail every Df-Duel, I had to do about 15 of this duels and only got a card to get to the TN for 2 to 3 times, my hand in turn 2 was also quite bad after a Soulstone with 11, 9, 3, 3, 2, 1. But it was also funny to face such a situation and we had lots of fun and I am quite confident that a game like that will not repeat in near future.
